In the Middle Ages, the breeches did not yet have a pouch, and for this reason the bag was worn hanging from the waist. The crusaders and pilgrims did not forget before leaving to have their purse and staff blessed in the church; and Saint Louis did this ceremony in Saint Denis.

In ancient graves and in certain parchment miniatures, various figures with bags of different makeings are seen. Men used to wear them hanging near the waist and women suspended from a long cord that reached the knee.
